Permanent Hair Removal at Its Best: The Laser Hair Removal Process Explained

There is a lot of disinformation out there about permanent hair removal procedures.

Many women are discouraged from getting the treatment because of myths surrounding the process of laser hair removal. Myths like nonexistent dangers and the idea that certain skin tones and hair colors can’t have it done.

Almost half of African American women don’t know that laser hair removal works with their skin tone.

If you have unwanted body hair, don’t let a misunderstanding stand in your way.

Start with this explanation of the laser hair removal process.

Start With a Consultation

Not all laser hair removal treatment procedures are the same.

Different clinics use different equipment. Some equipment, especially the older technology, may require more appointments than others.

Different people have different treatment needs. The process for removing facial hair or hair of greater thickness can be different than the process for removing thiner leg hair.

If you have a sensitive skin condition or any other particular need, your procedure may be a little different as well.

You can always start with a consultation to get a clear understanding of what your options are and what to expect.

However, you can learn a lot about the process before going to the clinic at all.

How Laser Hair Removal Works

It sounds very high tech but it’s pretty easy to understand the basic idea.

The laser is just a focused beam of light that’s absorbed by the pigment in the hair. The light heats the hair resulting in damage to the follicles that prevents future growth.

What the Process Entails

The technology has advanced quite a bit today. Your appointment will typically be quick and easy. It should definitely involve less time and less discomfort than a waxing, but it will take multiple appointments.

It will likely take several appointments to remove all the hair from the desired area. You’ll probably schedule each appointment a few weeks apart.

At each appointment, the technician will run a small, handheld laser over the skin of the desired area. Typically, the equipment used will also cool the skin.

Although the skin will be heated during the process, the discomfort you experience should not be significant. If you do experience more discomfort than usual, they should be able to offer pain relief, such as a topical cream to desensitize the skin.

After the appointment there may be some redness on the skin, but coloration should return to normal in less than an hour.

How to Prepare for the Appointment

There’s a few things you’ll want to keep in mind before the appointment.

  • You should shave the area about 12 – 24 hours prior to your appointment.
  • Be sure that there is no residue of any make up, lotion, self-tanner, etc. on the area
  • Avoid sunbathing before the appointment as well
